Cantilever Gate Installation in Sydney & the Sutherland Shire
A cantilever gate crosses its opening carrying its own weight. The leaf is built with a tail that stays behind the opening as a counterbalance, and it hangs from roller carriages bolted to posts on one side, so nothing touches the ground between the two gate posts. The tail is the whole idea. Because the leaf is supported only from one side, a length of it has to stay behind the rollers at all times to balance the part crossing the opening — that tail is not optional, it is the structure. It also means the leaf has to be stiff enough to stay straight while cantilevered, which is why a cantilever frame is deeper, heavier and dearer than a tracked leaf of the same width. The load then lands almost entirely on two roller carriages and the posts under them, so the footings on the run-off side are engineered work rather than a couple of bags of concrete: they carry the gate's mass, resist the overturning moment of a leaf hanging into the opening, and hold alignment for years of cycling. Get them right and a cantilever is very hard to kill. Get them wrong and the gate binds — no adjustment at the rollers fixes a post that is out of plumb.
The advantage bought with all that structure is that the opening stays empty. There is no track to fill with leaf litter, blown sand, gravel or stormwater, nothing for a truck to flatten, and nothing to trip on or catch a bike wheel — so a driveway that floods, a yard that vehicles drag mud across, and an entry that has to stay clear for drainage all stop being problems. That is also why the hardware suits high-cycle duty: with no ground contact there is very little to wear except the roller bearings and the drive. On our side of the job the footings and the trench for the supply and the safety-device cabling are dug on the same visit, and the supply itself is run and certified by our own electricians under NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 350318C with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued. Where a cantilever sliding gate is the right call
- Entries that flood or sheet water across the opening. The gate never touches the ground it crosses, so stormwater, silt and the grit that comes with them have nothing to collect in and nothing to jam.
- Debris-heavy sites — tree-lined streets, coastal blocks with blown sand, gravel yards and anywhere with constant leaf drop. This is the failure mode a ground track has and a cantilever simply does not.
- Uneven, unsealed or truck-worn ground across the opening. The leaf is carried entirely from one side, so the surface it passes over can be broken, patched or unsealed — and trucks and plant that would destroy a ground track and its fixings have nothing to destroy.
- High-cycle commercial and industrial entrances. With no ground contact and the load carried on roller bearings, cantilever hardware is built for gates that open and close all day rather than a handful of times.
- Openings that must stay completely clear — for drainage falls, for a level threshold, or because a channel, kerb or rail crosses the entry and nothing can be fixed through it.
When to choose something else
- Not enough run-off. A cantilever needs more clear space beside the opening than a tracked slider does, not less — the opening width plus the counterbalance tail, plus clearance. On a block where a tracked gate only just fits, a cantilever will not fit at all, and the answer is a telescopic gate that splits the leaf into panels.
- A clean, level, sealed suburban driveway with no debris problem. This is the case where a cantilever is simply the more expensive way to achieve the same result. If the track line is sound concrete, it falls the right way and there are no trees over it, a tracked slider does the same job for less and we will say so.
- Budget set by the gate alone. The leaf costs more because it has to be stiffer, and the footings are engineered civil work sized to carry and counterbalance it. Both land on the quote, and a cantilever priced as though it were a slider with the track left off has missed something.
- Ground on the run-off side that will not take the footings. Everything the gate weighs goes through two posts, so filled ground, a service easement, a boundary tight against the opening or a retaining wall in the wrong place can each make them impractical — a site constraint rather than something hardware solves.
- Permanently sterile ground beside the opening. The tail occupies its run-off whether the gate is open or shut, so that strip can never hold a garden bed, bins, a trailer or a path across it. On a narrow block that is a real loss of usable land.
- Exposed sites with solid infill on a long leaf. A cantilevered sheeted leaf is a long lever with wind on it, carried at one end. That is engineered around, but it drives the frame, the rollers and the footings up together, and a more open infill is often the cheaper answer.

- How much room does a cantilever gate need beside the opening?
- More than the opening — that is the trade-off people are least prepared for. The leaf has to travel its full width clear of the opening and the counterbalance tail has to stay behind the rollers while it does, so the run-off is the opening width plus the tail plus working clearance. As a planning rule, expect to need noticeably more clear fence line than a tracked slider would need on the same driveway, and treat the exact figure as something measured on site rather than assumed, because it moves with the leaf's construction. If that space does not exist, the gate type has to change: a telescopic gate stacks panels to cover a wide opening in roughly half the run-off, and a bi-folding gate needs less side room again.
- Why does a cantilever gate cost more than a tracked sliding gate?
- Three separate line items, none of them the motor. First the leaf: it is carried from one end, so the frame has to be deeper and stiffer to stay straight, which means more material and more fabrication. Second the tail: you are paying for gate you never see across the opening, because the counterbalance is part of the structure. Third, and usually the largest surprise, the civil work: the entire weight of the gate plus the overturning load of a leaf hanging into the opening goes through two posts, so their footings are engineered and poured accordingly. What you get back is an entry with nothing in it to block, flood, freeze or flatten, which on the right site pays for itself in service calls that never happen.
- Will a cantilever gate keep working in a driveway that floods?
- That is the specific case it is built for. The leaf is suspended from posts to one side and passes over the opening without touching it, so water crossing the entry, and the silt, leaf litter and grit that water carries, have nothing to collect in. A tracked gate in the same driveway fills its track channel every time it rains and jams until someone clears it. The things still worth checking on a flood-prone site are the operator's mounting height and enclosure, and where the cabling and conduits run, because the gate can be untroubled by water while the electrics sitting beside it are not. We set those levels at the site visit.
- What footings does a cantilever gate need?
- Substantial ones, and they are the part of the job to get right first. The posts on the run-off side carry the gate's full mass through the roller carriages, and they also resist the overturning moment created by a leaf reaching out across the opening — so the footing has to hold plumb under a load that changes direction every cycle. Size comes from the leaf's mass and length, the soil, and how often the gate runs. Reactive clay, filled ground and nearby trenching all matter. Alignment matters as much as size: two posts slightly out of plumb make a gate that binds, and that is not a fault you can adjust out at the rollers afterwards.
- Can an existing tracked sliding gate be converted to a cantilever?
- Rarely as a straight swap, and it is worth knowing why before paying for an inspection. A tracked leaf is designed to be supported along the bottom by the rollers it sits on, so it is usually not stiff enough to be carried from one end without sagging, and it has no counterbalance tail because it never needed one. On top of that the conversion needs new posts and new engineered footings on the run-off side, and enough clear run-off to take a leaf that is now longer than the opening. In practice most of the value in the old installation is the operator and the access control, which often carry over. Where the track is the thing causing the trouble, a rebuild as a cantilever is honest work — a conversion usually is not.
- Do cantilever gates suit driveways that trucks and plant cross?
- Yes, and it is one of the clearest reasons to choose one. A ground track across an opening that heavy vehicles cross takes a beating: the channel deforms, the fixings work loose, the track line goes out of level and the gate starts binding, so the site ends up paying to re-lay the track it has already bought. A cantilever leaves nothing in the opening to damage, which is why it turns up on yards, depots, transport sites and anywhere plant swings through the entry. The load then moves to the posts and footings on the run-off side, so those are sized for the duty, and the run-off strip needs to be somewhere vehicles will not clip the tail.
