Swing Gate Installation in Sydney & the Sutherland Shire
A swing gate is one or two hinged leaves that rotate on posts beside the opening, driven by an articulated arm, a linear ram, or an operator buried in the ground beneath the hinge. We install and automate them across Sydney and the Sutherland Shire, and we do the whole job on our own two licences — the security licence covers the gate and its access control, the electrical contractor licence covers the supply that feeds it.
Everything about a swing gate comes back to the posts. The leaf is a lever, and the longer it is the harder it works the hinges and the footing behind them — which is why a swing gate that has dropped, dragged or stopped latching is almost always a post that has moved rather than a gate that has bent. So the footing is sized for the leaf it has to carry, not for the fence it sits in; the hinges are set with adjustment left in them to take up movement later; and on a double gate a drop bolt goes into the driveway so the closed leaves hold each other rather than hanging off the operators. Solid infill changes the sums again — a sheeted or closely slatted leaf is a sail, and wind load on a wide leaf is a real number rather than a footnote.
The automation then has to suit the hinge, not just the gate. Articulated arms tolerate deep hinge setbacks and awkward pillars; rams are compact and tidy but want the pivot geometry right; underground operators leave the pillar looking untouched, and in return need a drained pit and a decision made before the pillar is built rather than after. Double gates add a job people rarely price in: the second leaf needs cabling to it, which means a conduit under the driveway — far cheaper to lay while the ground is already open than to retrofit through a finished slab. The trenching, the supply and the final connection are licensed electrical work in NSW — run and certified by our own electricians under NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 350318C, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued. Photocells, force limits and the manual release are set and demonstrated at commissioning, and intercom, keypad and access-control tie-ins sit under NSW Security Master Licence 000108088, so there is no second contractor on the driveway.
Where a swing gate is the right call
- Driveways with room in front of the gate line. If the arc can stay permanently clear — no parked car, no bins, no garden bed in the sweep — a swing gate is the least complicated way to close an opening and the least expensive to get right.
- Ground that is level, or that falls away from the opening. A leaf swinging over ground that drops slightly has clearance to spare, which is the easy version of this installation.
- Period, heritage and architectural frontages. A hinged leaf between two masonry pillars is the gate most people picture, and with an underground operator there is no visible hardware to break the look.
- Homes with modest traffic. A gate cycling a handful of times a day is exactly the duty hinge-and-arm hardware is designed around.
- Sites where the fence line beside the opening is unavailable. A slider needs that run of fence permanently clear; a swing gate does not use it at all, so gardens, meter boxes and a neighbour's boundary stop being the deciding constraint.
When to choose something else
- No clear arc. The leaves need their full sweep kept free, every day, permanently — which means you cannot park in the sweep, and on a short driveway the car usually has nowhere else to go. That is the most common reason we end up recommending a sliding gate on a site the owner had already decided would be a swing gate.
- Ground rising in front of the opening. A leaf swinging inward over rising ground will foul it. Rise-and-fall hinges buy a little, swinging outward is generally not acceptable over a footpath, and what is left is regrading or a gate that travels sideways instead.
- Wide openings. Leaf width is the enemy of a swing gate: as it grows, self-weight and leverage on the hinges grow with it, the post has to get bigger, and the gate becomes more prone to sag and harder to hold shut in wind. Splitting the opening into two leaves helps, but past a point the honest answer is a slider, a cantilever or a bi-folding gate.
- Opening towards the street. A leaf that sweeps over a public footpath is a pedestrian hazard and will generally not be accepted, so on a driveway too short to swing inward it is the gate type that has to change — the direction is not the adjustable part.
- Exposed sites with solid infill. Sheeted and closely slatted leaves catch wind, and a gust against a wide leaf loads the hinges, the footing and the operator at once. Where the look has to stay solid, a gate that moves in plane rather than through an arc is the more durable spend.
- High-cycle commercial traffic. Hinges, arms and rams on an entrance that opens all day wear faster than the same hardware on a house, and the leaf's own weight works against them every cycle. Cantilever or bi-folding hardware is built for that duty and a swing gate is not.

- Should a driveway swing gate open inwards or outwards?
- Inwards, onto your own property, in nearly every case. A leaf that sweeps out over the footpath crosses a public path used by pedestrians, prams and cyclists, which is both a safety problem and something councils are unlikely to accept on a street frontage. Outward opening is occasionally workable where the gate sits well back behind a long private approach with no public path in front of it. The catch is that inward opening needs the arc kept clear inside the property, so if the driveway is too short to give the leaves that room, the fix is not to flip the direction — it is to change to a gate that slides or folds.
- Why has my swing gate started dragging on the driveway?
- Usually the post has moved, not the gate. A leaf is a long lever and it works its footing constantly, so a footing undersized for the leaf, or softened by water getting into it, will lean a couple of degrees — and a couple of degrees at the post is a large drop at the far end of the leaf. The other usual causes are worn hinge pins, a frame that has racked because a double gate was never given a drop bolt, and hinges that have simply run out of adjustment. It is worth diagnosing before adjusting: winding the hinges up to chase a leaning post buys a few months and hides the real fault, which will keep moving.
- How wide can a swing gate leaf be?
- There is no single number, because the limit is set by weight and leverage rather than by width alone. A light aluminium slatted leaf and a steel-framed sheeted leaf of the same width are very different propositions for the hinges, the footing and the operator, and an exposed site adds wind load on top. Operators are rated by their manufacturers for a maximum leaf length and a maximum leaf mass together, and both have to be satisfied — FAAC, BFT, Nice, CAME, Centurion (CentSys) and ATA all publish those figures for their swing operators. We take the opening, the intended infill and the exposure at the site visit and size the hardware to the actual leaf, rather than quoting a width limit that ignores what the leaf is made of.
- Underground, articulated arm or ram — which swing gate operator is right?
- Hinge geometry decides it, along with how much hardware you are willing to see. An articulated arm copes with a deep hinge setback and a wide pillar, which makes it the forgiving choice on masonry piers and on retrofits where the gate is already hung. A linear ram is compact and neat and gives a controlled sweep, but it wants the pivot geometry within a sensible range, so it suits gates whose hinge sits close to the face of the post. An underground operator is the one that disappears completely, and it is the right answer where the frontage matters — the trade-off is a drained pit at the hinge and a decision made before the pillars are built, because retrofitting one into a finished pier and driveway is expensive work.
- What footings do automatic swing gate posts need?
- More than a fence post, and the difference is the whole point. A fence post carries its own weight; a gate post carries a leaf hanging off one side and takes the shock of every close, so its footing has to resist overturning rather than just stand up. Depth and diameter come from the leaf's weight and length, from the soil, and where the post is masonry from the pier detail. Reactive clay, filled ground and the trench dug for the driveway drainage all bear on it. Where an existing pillar is being reused we check whether it can actually take an operator before quoting one, because bolting hardware to a pier that was built decorative is how a gate ends up moving the pillar instead of the leaf.
- Can a swing gate be automated on a driveway that slopes uphill?
- Sometimes, and it needs looking at properly rather than guessing from the street. The problem is clearance: a leaf swinging inward over rising ground runs out of gap before it finishes its sweep. Rise-and-fall hinges lift the leaf as it opens and will deal with a gentle grade. Past that, the practical options are regrading a level pad at the gate line, moving the gate line back to a flatter part of the driveway, or accepting that the site wants a gate that travels sideways instead — a slider suits a driveway that climbs precisely because the leaf never passes over the slope at all. We check the grade with a level at the site visit and say which of those it is before quoting.
