Sliding Gate Installation in Sydney & the Sutherland Shire
A tracked sliding gate is a single leaf that runs on a ground track set into the driveway, travelling sideways along the fence line and driven by a rack-and-pinion motor that engages a toothed rack bolted to the gate frame. We install and automate them across Sydney and the Sutherland Shire — and because we hold both a security and an electrical contractor licence, the company that hangs the gate is the company that runs and certifies the 240 V supply behind it.
There are only a handful of parts and every one of them decides whether the gate is still working in ten years. The track has to be dead level along its full length and fixed to something solid. The bottom rollers or bogies carry the leaf's weight, the guide rollers at the post keep it upright, and the catch post takes it at the close. The rack bolts to the frame and has to be aligned so the pinion sits at the right mesh — too tight and it grinds, too loose and it climbs. Then the operator, sized to the leaf, and the safety devices. When a sliding gate gives trouble it's almost never the motor; it's the track line, the mesh or the footing.
The other half of the job is electrical, and it's the half that turns a gate purchase into a coordination problem for most people. The supply to the operator is licensed electrical work in NSW: it's run and certified by our own electricians under NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 350318C, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work issued, and any trench for it dug on the same visit. Safety edges, photocells and force limits are set and tested against relevant Australian gate-safety requirements at commissioning, and the manual release is shown to you before we leave. Intercom, keypad and access-control tie-ins are our other licence — NSW Security Master Licence 000108088 — so there's no third party on the driveway.
Where a sliding gate is the right call
- Short driveways. A swing leaf needs its whole arc kept clear, which on a short drive means either a car parked over the sweep or a gate opening towards the footpath. A slider travels along the fence and takes none of the driveway.
- Sloped and stepped entries. The leaf moves sideways, so fall along the driveway — the thing that stops a swing gate dead once the ground rises in front of it — stops being the deciding factor.
- Narrow blocks with a clear straight fence line to receive the leaf. If that run of fence is already free of gardens, bins and taps, the gate can use it and you lose nothing you were using anyway.
- Wide openings on a sensible budget. A slider spans more than a single swing leaf reasonably can, and does it for less than cantilever hardware costs on the same opening.
- Sites with a solid level base already in place. An existing concrete apron across the opening, or a purpose-poured track strip, gives the track the continuous fixing it needs and keeps the civil work small.
When to choose something else
- No run-off room. The leaf has to go somewhere — you need roughly the opening width again clear along the fence line, plus clearance. If that space isn't there, no amount of hardware fixes it, and the honest answer is a telescopic gate or a bi-folding gate instead.
- Leaf litter, sand and stormwater across the track. Tree-lined streets fill a ground track with leaves and grit; near the beach it's blown sand; a driveway that sheets water across the opening delivers both. A track that fills is a gate that jams, and on those sites a cantilever gate is the right call.
- Crossfall across the track line. The track must be level along its whole length, so a driveway that falls sideways across the opening needs regrading or a new concrete strip first. That civil work can cost more than the gate, and it's better to know before you fall in love with the idea.
- Unsealed, gravel or soft ground. A ground track needs continuous stable footing under its entire length. Laid over dirt or gravel it moves, the mesh goes out, and the gate becomes a recurring service call rather than an installation.
- Flood-prone entries and very high-cycle commercial traffic. A jammed track doesn't slow an entrance down, it stops it. Where the entry floods or the gate cycles constantly all day, the correct spend is a cantilever gate or a bi-folding speed gate, and we'll say so rather than sell you the cheaper hardware twice.

- How much space do you need for a sliding gate?
- As a working rule, the opening width again clear along the fence line, plus a bit of clearance for the end of the leaf and the guide posts — a 4 m opening wants about 4 m of unobstructed fence beside it. The run-off has to stay clear permanently, so gardens, bins, taps, meter boxes and the neighbour's boundary all count against it. If the space isn't there, a telescopic gate splits the leaf into panels that stack, and a bi-folding gate needs almost no side room at all. We measure the run-off at the site visit before recommending a gate type, because it's the constraint that decides the answer.
- What's the difference between a sliding gate and a cantilever gate?
- A sliding gate runs on a track fixed to the ground. A cantilever gate hangs from rollers on posts to one side and crosses the opening with nothing underneath it. The slider is cheaper and needs a level, solid track line; the cantilever costs more and needs more run-off, but ignores leaves, sand, stones and stormwater across the opening. Debris and drainage usually decide it.
- Can a sliding gate be installed on a sloping driveway?
- Usually yes — and this is the most common misunderstanding we correct on site. Slope along the driveway, running up or down away from the road, is fine: the leaf travels sideways across it, which is exactly why sliders suit sloped entries that would defeat a swing gate. What isn't fine is fall across the track line, where one side of the opening sits lower than the other. The track has to be level along its full length, so crossfall has to be dealt with civilly first — regrading, a levelled concrete strip, or moving the gate line to a flatter part of the driveway. We check both directions with a level at the site visit, not by eye.
- Does a sliding gate need a concrete track?
- It needs a continuous, level, solid base along the full travel of the leaf, and in practice that means concrete — either an existing apron and driveway slab that's sound and level enough to take the track, or a purpose-poured strip along the run-off. The operator also needs its own pad or footing beside the opening, positioned so the pinion meets the rack at the right height, plus a conduit for the supply and the safety-device cabling. Where new concrete is needed it goes on the itemised ex-GST quote as its own line, so you can see the civil cost separately from the gate and the automation.
- What size motor does a sliding gate need?
- Leaf weight and cycles per day, not driveway width. Operators are rated for a maximum gate mass and a duty cycle, and the two have to be read together: the same 4 m leaf on a house that opens four times a day and on a unit block that opens two hundred times a day are different specifications. A heavy infill panel, a wind-exposed site or a long leaf all push the weight up. FAAC, BFT and Centurion (CentSys) all publish gate-weight and duty ratings for their sliding operators, and we match the operator to the measured leaf and the actual traffic rather than to the opening size.
- What maintenance does a sliding gate track need?
- Keeping the track channel clear is the whole job, and it's the one thing an owner can do themselves — a broom or a blower along the track every few weeks, more often under trees or near the beach. Beyond that: the bottom rollers or bogies wear and eventually get noisy or notchy, the rack teeth and pinion wear where the mesh is out of adjustment, and drainage across the track line needs to keep running so grit washes past rather than settling in. An annual check on a domestic gate covers rollers, rack alignment, safety edges and force limits. This is the maintenance a cantilever gate simply doesn't have, and it's a fair part of the reason to choose one over the other on a debris-heavy site.
